One Big Mistake I see, and how learning about it has helped me think through things more clearly.

The When/Then Fallacy

The conversations generally go a similar way:

Person 1 – “I want Y”
Person 2 – “Have you X, to get Y?”
Person 1 – “No, Once I have Y, then I’ll do X.”

Person 1 is flipping the sequence of the actions. The When/Then fallacy.

When I have money, then I will invest.
When I lose some weight, then I’ll workout.
When I find the right Home, then I’ll talk to a Lender.
When I have money, I’ll sign up for the class on how to make money.
When I’m more confident, then I’ll go up and talk to that person.

Something occurs because of this way of thinking:

Nothing.

Whatever Y is, whether that’s the home of your dreams, the body you want to achieve, the financial freedom you want, the person you want to meet, or any number of other things. None of that happens when you simply get the steps out of order.

Noticing it actually helped me to start thinking about things with the understanding of this tendency.

Now, when I think about things I want, I try to have a clearer frame to think through.

Get the order of operations correct. That way you get the right answer in math class, and what you want in life.

If you, the reader, can share a time this happened to you and how you got through it or let it affect you, I’d love to hear from you.
